มาลัยตุ้ม หมายถึง มาลัยที่ร้อยให้มีลักษณะรูปทรงตามขวางเป็นรูปกลม โดยเริ่มต้นจะเป็นวงกลมขนาดเล็กแล้วค่อยๆ ใหญ่หรือกว้างขึ้นทีละน้อยมาถึงประมาณช่วงกลางแล้วค่อยๆ ลดลงทีละน้อยให้มีขนาดเท่ากับตอนแรกๆ จนกระทั่งเหมือนตอนขึ้นต้น ส่วนลักษณะรูปทรงตามยาวนั้นคล้ายดอกบัวตูม ช่วงหัวท้ายเรียวตรงกลางป่องโค้งมน มาลัยตุ้มขนาดเล็กสุดนิยมร้อย 9 ชั้น และขนาดใหญ่สุด 15 ชั้น การร้อยมาลัยตุ้มจำนวนชั้นจะต้องเป็นเลขคี่เสมอ เช่น 9, 11, 13 , 15 มาลัยตุ้มมี 2 แบบด้วยกัน คือ 1. แบบไม่มีลาย 2. แบบมีลาย วิธีการร้อยมาลัยตุ้ม มีหลักสำคัญดังต่อไปนี้ 1.จะต้องเริ่มต้นร้อยด้วยดอกเล็ก หรือกลีบเล็กก่อน ควรส่งก้านหรือส่งกลีบสั้นที่สุด และชั้นต่อๆ ไปควรส่งก้านให้ยาวขึ้นทีละน้อยๆ จนถึงช่องยาวประมาณครึ่งเป็นช่วงที่มีความป่องโตเต็มที่เท่ากับ ขนาดที่ต้องการ ( ช่อง 2-3 แถวตรงกลาง ) แล้วค่อยๆ ส่งก้านสั้นลงทีละน้อยย้อนกลับมาเท่าขนาดตอนเริ่มต้น 2. ความยาวของมาลัยตุ้มประมาณ 2 ? - 3 ? นิ้ว ต้องระวังอย่าร้อยให้ยาวนัก เพราะมองดู แล้วจะกลายเป็นมาลัยตัวหนอนไป 3. การขึ้นต้นมาลัยตุ้มนั้น จำนวนดอกหรือกลีบไม่แน่นอนย่อมขึ้นอยู่กับขนาดของดอกหรือ กลีบด้วยว่า มีขนาดเล็กหรือใหญ่ ถ้าดอกใหญ่หรือกลีบใหญ่ก็ขึ้นจำนวนกลีบน้อย แล้วค่อยๆ เพิ่มขึ้นตามความ เหมาะสมในชั้นต่อๆ ไป เช่น ถ้าดอกพุดตูม ( ขนาดเล็ก ) หรือกลีบกุหลาบจะขึ้นต้นประมาณ 5 ดอก หรือ 5 กลีบ แต่ถ้าเป็นดอกบานไม่รู้โรยจะขึ้นต้นเพียง 1 ดอกเท่านั้น หน้าที่ใช้สอยของมาลัยตุ้ม ใช้เป็นมาลัยชำรวยให้แก่แขกที่มาในงาน เช่น งานหลั่งน้ำพระพุทธมนต์ในพิธีมงคลสมรส หรือในโอกาสอื่น ๆ ใช้เป็นส่วนประกอบตกแต่งในงานประดิษฐ์ดอกไม้สดของไทยเช่น งานเครื่องแขวนดอกไม้สดของไทย ร้อยใส่ไม้ไผ่แหลมๆ ต่อก้านแล้วปักแจกัน หรือจัดดอกไม้สดในโอกาสต่างๆ ใช้เป็นส่วนประกอบของมาลัย ใช้เป็นส่วนประกอบของมาลัยครุย ใช้ประกอบเป็นมาลัยคล้องมือ
