ความหมายของเงินปันผล (DIVIDEND) มันก็ค่อนข้างจะชัดเจนกันอยู่แล้ว ว่าเป็นเงินที่ปันออกมาเป็นสัดส่วนต่าง ๆ เข้าเรื่องแบบวิชาการสักหน่อย จะหมายถึง ผลกำไรที่บริษัททำได้และถูกส่งต่อมายังผู้ถือหุ้น ซึ่งอาจจะจ่ายมาในรูปแบบของเงินสด หุ้นสามัญ ซึ่งมันก็ขึ้นอยู่กับแต่ละบริษัทว่ามีอัตราการจ่ายเงินปันผลแบบไหน มันอาจจะแตกต่างกันไปตามแต่นโยบายแต่ละที่ ซึ่งในทางบริษัทเองก็มีสิทธิ์ที่จะไม่จ่ายก็ได้เหมือนต่อให้มีกำไรก็ตาม
อาจมีปัจจัยบางอย่างที่เป็นสาเหตุทำให้บริษัทไม่จ่ายเงินปันผลแก่ผู้ถือหุ้น อย่างบริษัทกำลังอยู่ในช่วงเติบโตบางที่ก็จ่ายแต่น้อยหรือจ่ายบ้าง ไม่จ่ายบ้าง ไปจนถึงไม่จ่ายเลยก็มีเพราะว่าบริษัทจะต้องเอาเงินนั้นไปลงทุน หากเอามาจ่ายหมดจะทำให้เงินสดในบริษัทลดลง การทำแบบนี้ก็ไม่ได้เสียหายอะไรมันก็หมายถึงหุ้นบริษัทเองก็กำลังเติบโตเช่นกัน
เพื่อให้มองภาพชัดเจนขึ้นในคำอธิบายข้างต้นก็ลองหาข้อมูลบริษัทที่อยู่ในตลาดหลักทรัพย์แต่ว่ามีกำไรต่อเนื่องตลอด แต่ว่าดันไม่เคยจ่ายเงินปันผลเลย รวมถึงบริษัทที่จ่ายบ้างไม่จ่ายบ้าง ซึ่งหลายที่ก็เติบโตอย่างดีมาก ๆ แทบจะก้าวกระโดดเลย แต่มันก็ต้องขึ้นอยู่กับหลายปัจจัยด้วยโดยเฉพาะการบริหาร นโยบาย ฉะนั้นแล้วใครที่ลงทุนกับบริษัทอะไรจะต้องมีความรู้ที่มากพอมิเช่นนั้นโอกาสที่จะไม่ได้ทั้งเงินปันผลแถมยังขาดทุนก็มาพร้อมกันได้เหมือนกัน
